How can we believe in the existence of what cannot be seen? And how can we prove the reality of what cannot be touched? As its first exhibition of 2026, Gallery Belle Vie presents the works of four artists selected through an open call, each offering their own answer to these questions. The Shape of Existence reveals how different intangible presences are given artistic substance through the hands of four emerging artists—Kang Haechan, Kim Yoon, Lee Yubin, and Hong Sujeong.
Kang Haechan paints atmosphere. Where air currents, temperature, humidity, and the memories and emotions held within stillness converge, the artist suggests that nothing is ever truly empty. He translates onto canvas a landscape observed as if from a third-person viewpoint—slipping out of the world around him in a near out-of-body state—rendered in varied hues. To focus on sensation within a landscape becomes a brief departure from the repetitions of reality, extending into an illusory refuge shaped by light and moisture.
Kim Yoon layers questions and resistance. The successive acts of tearing, melting, and adhering plastic bags re-create a cheap disposable object as a work of art. It is also a process that deliberately triggers a “perceptual error,” making us unable to recognize the plastic bag as a plastic bag even as its original properties remain. Through this, the artist asks: what, within our perception, has hardened into certainty? Casting doubt on fixed images and resisting them—this is what the artist truly produces.
Lee Yubin shapes inner contemplation. Beginning from the question, “How truthful can I be to myself?” her work takes form as a performative practice that searches for meaning through repetition. The process of placing small terracotta pieces—formed from the materiality of clay meeting water, fire, and air—across the surface of a canvas does not aim to prove an outcome; rather, it allows the process itself to speak its meaning. Performative repetition yields a surface that is no longer repetitive; emotion and time, action and existence remain as visible forms that reach the viewer.
Hong Sujeong paints energy. The artist calls “energy” the waves we cannot see, yet suddenly feel in reality without explanation—the vibration that undeniably exists—and records it in the language of painting. Subtle movements created by nature become the seeds of the image; lines then repeat, entangle, and expand, forming “masses of energy” that ultimately appear to live and move. He believes the most important role of his work lies in each viewer observing with their own rhythm and sensibility, discovering within it an individual resonance and wave.
Before the works, the viewer does not close their eyes to feel; instead, they open their eyes wide and receive forms that have come alive visually. And beyond the subjects the four artists place at the center of their practice, this exhibition hopes viewers will also grope toward and sense something more—things that are passed down like legends yet remain without shape. For instance, the direction one longs to move toward, or the steadfast love held for someone.
