Tae Woo’s solo exhibition <好虎時節 The Season of the Tiger 4> opens at Gallery Belle Vie in March 2025. Drawing on the concept of 臥遊事狀, the artist depicts contemporary landscapes and still lifes, translating a classical mode of seeing into the present.
臥遊事狀 is composed of 臥 (“to lie down”) and 遊 (“to roam”), meaning “to travel while lying down.” The term is rooted in the thought of 宗炳, an early landscape painter and theorist of the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. Fond of visiting celebrated mountains in person, 宗炳 eventually grew too old to continue his travels. He then began to paint those famed vistas, hang them inside his home, and take pleasure in contemplating them while lying down. He described this experience as a form of spiritual liberation that surpasses the limitations of the body and of age, and it is said to have led to a practice of inner cultivation.
Trained in East Asian painting, Tae Woo considers the spiritual freedom at the heart of 臥遊事狀 to be the truest form of joy. Reinterpreting it through a contemporary lens, he renders it with his distinctive wit and buoyant sensibility—qualities that lend his works their characteristic ease and gentle humor.
In <好虎時節 The Season of the Tiger 4>, a central figure appears against the vistas of 臥遊山水: a tiger named 家守虎, who wanders through the painted landscape. 家守虎—literally, “the tiger who guards and protects the home”—reimagines a creature long cherished in Korean painting and minhwa, often regarded as a mountain spirit or auspicious presence. Through Tae Woo’s eyes, the tiger is reborn as a guardian that extends beyond the literal notion of “home” to embrace “family.” Sometimes roaming alone, sometimes alongside loved ones, 家守虎 at times transforms—becoming a mountain or a tree—to shield what is precious from surging storms.
Gallery Belle Vie is a space that brings contemporary artists’ works into closer view through a warm gaze. This March, a landscape where the old and the present converge will unfold here, offering a scene that invites delight. We welcome you into these wandering landscapes—an invitation to travel while lying down, alongside Tae Woo.
