Gallery Belle Vie is pleased to present 《Humbly, the Dark Night》, a solo exhibition by Gam Seongbin. The exhibition marks the artist’s long-awaited return to Seoul with his first solo presentation in Seoul in eight years, bringing together works that give quiet and compelling form to sorrow, loss, and the fragile truths of being human.
Gam’s sculptures and paintings turn toward sorrow, an emotion we all know yet often keep beneath the surface. In his work, sorrow is not something to be overcome or concealed. Rather, it becomes a way of recognizing one another more deeply. The silent figures that emerge from the artist’s hands and inhabit the space offer a profound reassurance: within sorrow, none of us is entirely alone.
The artist has said that these forms resemble us as we endure pain, build ourselves up, and continue to grow fragile, yet quietly dear. Knowing that darkness, too, belongs to life, he sits beside sits beside them and hums softly, keeping them company without hurry. What follows in his work is not a simple gesture of comfort, but a deeper sense of relief and an understanding that arrives quietly, without being asked for.
For years, Gam has built and undone his forms through layers of time, giving shape to the burdens we carry within the boundaries of relationships. To stand before his work is to enter a space of wordless recognition, where empathy is felt before it is explained.
I still vividly remember the the surge of feeling I experienced when I first encountered Gam Seongbin’s work several years ago. Now, those memories and the time they have carried are brought into the space of Gallery Belle Vie.
May this exhibition become a quiet form of consolation, one we offer to ourselves. With deep gratitude, I extend my heartfelt regard to Gam Seongbin, who has allowed us to face the dark night with humility.
