Do you remember the last time you read a fairytale that ended with “…and they lived happily ever after”?
Not for a child, but for yourself—when you could still imagine being the protagonist of the story.
Even if you were to come across such a tale by chance today, it would be difficult to feel the same sense of wonder you once did. We have come to understand just how fragile—and perhaps even elusive—a “happy ending” can be. Both “happy” and “ending” may seem distant, almost unrealistic, to those navigating the complexities of adulthood.
And yet, for those luminous adults who occasionally long to dream like in a fairytale, Gallery Belle Vie presents <…happily ever after>, a two-person exhibition by Gammanzi and Kim Eunjoo, opening this May, the month of family.
In Gammanzi’s painted worlds, there are no singular heroes or princesses. Instead, the artist captures ordinary neighbors and family members through a tender, affectionate gaze, transforming everyday moments into something quietly extraordinary. Through a meticulous process of layering gesso and sanding the surface smooth, Gammanzi builds a refined canvas upon which fluid ink lines move like a dance. Vibrant colors are then added, completing a visual language that is at once free, warm, and deeply personal.
Kim Eunjoo’s canvases begin with a different point of departure: the discovery of one’s own inner emotions within fantastical protagonists. Her seemingly dazzling, even otherworldly magical girls embody universal feelings—loneliness, jealousy, temptation—that reside within us all. As these figures are rendered through the artist’s antique, painterly oil technique, the canvas unfolds into a beautifully imagined world. Paradoxically, the more enchanting the scene becomes, the more expansive our empathy toward these shared emotions grows.
In this sunlit month of May, Gallery Belle Vie invites you to open a long-forgotten fairytale, tucked away in the attic of your heart, alongside Gammanzi and Kim Eunjoo. After all, each of us is already the protagonist of a story that quietly shimmers within.
…happily ever after.
